Michigan Central StationTuesday, July 24th, 2001. Brad, Jeremy and myself embarked on a ghetto journey to explore the historic abandoned Michigan Central Station south of downtown Detroit. We tried to enter the station from the back. Unfortunately, we were stopped in our tracks [literally because we were on the tracks and turned around]. A new fence was installed around the building with razor wire coiled at the top to prevent trespassers [asif, what is trespassing?]. We were lucky enough to find an opening in the front of the building. Altogether we spent about 2 hours exploring the building. This place was straight out of the post apocalyse, yo. The lower floors of the building are intact. But the higher we went, the more dilapidated it got. Another great feature of this building is the fact that almost every square inch either has graffiti on it or is demolished. All of the windows are broken out. I was surprised that there wasn't any wild animals hanging around. I didn't see any polar bears or werewolves. Maybe next time.

We first hit the boiler room area, which was completely flooded. There were rooms where there was no floor, just water. All of the access tunnels were also flooded. We explored this area for awhile and headed upstairs. Going to the higher floors of the building was kinda freaky because of the fact that the railings for the stairs were ripped out and there was holes in the rubble covered steps. Not to mention the fact that the windows in front of the steps were all broken. I coulda swore I was feeling some vertigo. The ceilings and floors on the top floors of the building were all ripped up care of weather damage. I realized after we were walking on the roof that people driving on the highway or coming to Detroit via the Ambassador Bridge could see us. That was kind of wack. We didn't get attacked by any ghosts or vampires but there was always the danger of the floor and/or ceiling collapsing, but luckily they didn't.

I am really glad to have been able to explore the building that I've heard so much about since high school. I regret never doing the same with the Hudson's building before it was demolished. My parents never took me there when I was a kid. They are scared of Detroit.

Jeremy has some great photos and video footage of our excursion. Be sure to check out his Michigan Central Station microsite for stuff that I did not cover and some really funny video clips.
