08.10.2001 - Flirting With Disaster
There were a number of bad things that happened/could have happened on my Radiohead Chicago/Toronto trips. I just wanna know why...
Chicago - We used Mapquest to map to our hotel. The thing was, Mapquest mapped us about 12 blocks south of where we were supposed to be. We wasted about 45 minutes trying to find the motel. We had to wait 20 minutes when we got to the motel because check in time was 3 PM and none of rooms were clean. When we got to the room the faucet was running rusty water. Everything after that was great. That ended when we were heading home. We took my sister's car. She has a Pontiac Grand Am [the model that was recalled because if the starter doesn't work you have a chance of blowing up your car if you try to start it again]. She didn't tell me this while I tried to start this multiple times. I got the car started and everything was ok. I drove till about Jackson and we switched drivers. My sister got a ticket for speeding less than 15 minutes after we switched. She was yelling and complaining about it all the way home. I told her not to tell my parents when we got home because they overreact about everything and I wanted to rest, she agreed. What do you know? The first thing she says to my dad when we walk in the door is "I got a ticket." Oh yeah, and there were flash floods that delayed flights and blocked major highways in Chicago. I don't even know how we missed that.
Toronto - [Background Information - I took my car to the dealer for a complete checkup and repair before going to Barrie, there was a bubble in my tire but I figured it was ok since they didn't say anything about it] The Molson Park venue is about 45 minutes north of Toronto. There was a message sent out via ticketmaster saying that the opening time was bumped up from 3:30 to 3 PM. I didn't even get to Toronto until 3 PM. Traffic from Toronto to Barrie was gridlocked so bad. The Chicago show was very on-time so I had valid reason to freak out. I mean I'm not gonna drive all that way to miss that show, no freakin way. Anyways, after being stuck in traffic for and hour and 45 minutes, I got to the occursed venue. As I was walking away from my car, one of the kids next to me told me that I had a flat tire. I figured that I'd take care of it after the show since it was 6 PM and I was already late. I impulsively turned around and went back to my car and attempted to change the tire. The lugnuts were on so tight, they wouldn't budge for nothing and ripped my hand in the process. All I wanted to do was put the temporary spare on. I then spotted a tire shop next to the ugly Molson Park. I walked over there but of course it was 6 PM and they were closed. There was one guy there but the beige toothed dumbass was a not helping me at all. I asked him if he something I could blow up my tire with, he said no. He pretty much said no to everything I asked him and then said something about not driving on the flat tire because it would screw up the rim. I wanted to slap him in the face and yell "What the hell else do you want me to do, you bastard?" At that point I was so pissed and frustrated I just walked to the show.
The parking setup for the venue was so bad. There was one exit for like 3 lots. I walked to my car and saw some of the guys next to my car. They were leaning on my car so I hit the panic button and they got all scared. It was pretty funny. Anyways, I tried to change the tire again and failed. They tried to help me but instead they broke a stud with the lugnut attached to it. I completely gave up on trying to change it at this time. I sat in my handicapped one year old car in disgust as a bunch of ghetto cars were driving past me with no problem. Roadside assistance [CAA] came to help some other people who were standed so I figured I'd give it a shot. I asked the guy if he would change the tire and he said "No, if one the studs is broken I can't do it." Thanks alot, you worthless roadside assistance person.
I didn't care about the rim, I just wanted to get out of there. I drove over to a nearby gas station to fill the tire up with air and find the leak. There was a big hole in the the tire. I filled it up with emergency tire repair but it didn't work because the hole was too big. After walking around for 2 hours and asking numerous gas station attendants about hotels and/or a place that had duct tape to cover the hole I found a 24 hour grocery store. I bought some duct tape and taped the outside of my tire. It seemed like a good idea. My goal was to get back to Toronto. I went on to the highway and was doing ok for about 15 minutes. It was all over after that. The tape on my tire was gone and the entire sidewall of it was melted. I parked on the side of the road and called 911.
It was 4 AM, I was falling asleep in my car while waiting for the cop to come. He came after 45 minutes and was extremely helpful. He called my tire Square. That must be some Canadian lingo for flat tires, I dunno it confused me. I told him my story and the fact that Mr. CAA didn't want to change my tire at Molson Park. I told him to make them change my tire so I could get hell out of there. After another half hour the other Mr.Smart CAA to come. He came, asked me what happened and what not. I handed him the jack and told him to look for the groove to put the jack into because it would mess up the car otherwise. He stopped what he was doing, looked at me and said "I have done this before." I was surprised at his attitude and wanted to say something back and laugh too, but I didn't. Later he said something like "I got these lugnuts off like that, what was your problem?" I didn't say anything. So then he comes up to me and says, "Ok, its $40." I had $10 on me and offered it to him, I also asked if he took credit cards. He got kind of mad, said "Forget it" and took off. I got to Toronto at 6 AM and didn't end up sleeping for 36 hours. I hate Barrie and Molson Park forever. Sorry about the extra long entry.
